Faculty in Residence Application         Faculty Guide Application

The Faculty in Residence (FIR) and Faculty Guide (FG) program is designed to enhance the life of each Residential House and to support the academic mission of the University by facilitating educationally purposeful interactions among residents and faculty outside of the classroom.

Because both Faculty Guides and Faculty in Residence aim to connect faculty and students outside the classroom, both positions require a considerable time commitment, including nights and weekends.  The Faculty in Residence, in particular, requires constant informal (and more formal) interactions with students because the FIR lives in an apartment in a second year residence hall.

Faculty in Residence

Faculty in Residence work with second year students and are provided a one-bedroom apartment in one of the upper-class residence halls.

The learning outcomes for the faculty in residence position are as follows:

*FIR will develop events and opportunities outside the classroom that extend and deepen intellectual curiosity for the second year experience, surrounding the 5 tenets of the second year residential curriculum (academics, career, social, civic engagement, and only at GW)

*Students will take part in celebrating intellectual curiosity through the Faculty Symposium Series

*Students will learn how to appropriately interact with Faculty through informal discussion between FIR and residents

*Students will gain a deeper understanding of academic persistence through mentorship from the Faculty in Residence

Highlights of Faculty in Residence events:

-Hosted Clarissa Adamson from the US Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human

-Rights and Labor/International Religious Freedom, talking with students about working at the U.S. Department of State.

-Hosted a monthly student book club

-Held a lecture and reception with artist Charles Cumming

Faculty Guides

There are 8 Faculty Guides that work with first year students in each of our first year houses.  Our Faculty Guides do not live in the residence halls, but receive $6,000 annually.

The learning outcomes for the faculty guide position are as follows:

*First Year students will learn how to approach and appropriately talk with professors

*Faculty Guides will help first year students acclimate to a rigorous college curriculum through academic mentorship

*Faculty Guides will provide opportunity for first year students to explore academic pursuits and develop intellectual curiosity outside the classroom

*Students will celebrate intellectual curiosity through the Faculty Symposium Series

Highlights of Faculty Guide events:

-Alumni Fireside, an event where Abby Gonzalez, a public diplomacy Foreign Service Officer was invited to discuss Public Relations & the U.S. Foreign Service.

-Thurston Cultural Night of Salsa Dance Performance & Lesson: A professional Cuban salsa dancing troupe performed two songs, then gave basic lessons on how to dance salsa.
