Squatter's Rights

Interested Third- and Fourth-Year students must complete a Squatter’s Rights Application and a Fall 2009 – Spring 2010 Housing Application via the GW Housing Programs Student Web.

The completed and signed “Squatter’s Rights Application” is due to the GW Housing Programs’ Front Desk in the John Quincy Adams House before the close of business on Friday, March 6, 2009.   Due to the scheduling of Housing Assignment Process, this is a firm deadline.

Application decisions will be sent to students on a rolling basis via e-mail (return receipt), and no later than close of business on March 13, 2009.   Submission of the squatting application does not guarantee the ability to squat.

Squatter’s Rights Guidelines

  • Eligible students will be permitted to “squat” their current building room type.  For example, if you currently reside in Dakota 901, which is a quad, you will be requesting to remain in a Dakota quad, not necessarily the specific room number, unit 901.
Applications will not be accepted from current residents living in:  the Greek Townhouses, International House, any Scholars’ Village Townhouses, any Living and Learning Cohort, GWHP staff rooms, any current or future First-Year residence hall, Potomac House, or any Focus on Fall Abroad Community (FOFAC) room in New Hall or City Hall.
  • Only Third- and Fourth-Year Students may initiate a squatting request.  Students other than your current roommate(s) are allowed to be pulled into squatted rooms.  While it is not required that you fill a room, you are strongly encouraged to do so.
  • Roommate requests must be eligible for housing with the exception of Rising Second-Year students whom cannot be pulled into 1959 E Street or City Hall in accordance with DC Zoning Commission guidelines.
  • Students assigned through the iHousing Squatter’s Rights process are not permitted to cancel their Housing License Agreement and must occupy the room for the next academic year, FALL 2009 – SPRING 2010, unless they qualify to cancel under the terms of the Request to Cancel Undergraduate Housing License Agreement, 2009-2010.
  • Students participating in the Focus on Fall Abroad Community (FOFAC) for the Fall 2009-Spring 2010 academic year are not allowed to initiate or be pulled into a squatted room.
  • Approved applicants seeking to initiate a squat or to be pulled into a squatted room must still complete a housing application via the student web.
  • To be eligible, students must have no student accounts holds on their record and be currently registered for the Spring 2009 term.
  • Students returning to housing from off-campus/study abroad are eligible to be pulled into a “squatters” group if they are eligible for the iHousing Assignment Process and satisfy other squatter’s requirements.

Squatter's Rights Form

These policies only apply to the iHousing Assignment Process for FALL 2009 – SPRING 2010 and are subject to review annually.
