Your Move-In Timeslot
Move-in timeslot selections are now open to all students with a housing assignment.
Students will sign up for an arrival timeslot on their designated arrival day through the E-Services Portal. In the summer, our office will email all of our upcoming residents to let them know they are eligible to sign up for a move-in timeslot. Timeslots will be in four-hour blocks, of which we ask that you plan to arrive and unload vehicles during the first hour and unpack during the remaining three hours. We also ask that vehicles be removed from the street and put into our garages on the Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon Campuses as quickly as possible to continue to allow traffic to flow on these particularly busy days.
The Move-In Process
We are excited to welcome our students back to the residence halls for the 2022-2023 academic year. Each building has a unique check-in process. Please review the process below for your specific housing assignment to smoothly move into the residence halls this August.

Please park in accordance with all DC Parking laws, as parking is being enforced on these days. First-year students will receive their GWorld ID Card at check-in. All students will receive their U•Pass at check in. All students will receive a blue cart to assist with bringing their items inside the building (please note that our blue carts are in high demand on move-in days and may not be immediately available. The CLRE team will provide one to you as soon as we’re able).
Please note that GW currently has a mask mandate that is in place for all University-owned and -operated indoor spaces.
CLRE Staff will be at the check-in location to provide assistance with any facilities questions that may arise!

Pre-Arrival & Return to Campus COVID-19 Testing
Students who have not taken a COVID test at the GW Testing Center since July 2022 must present a negative COVID-19 PCR test when they check in to their residence hall to the Campus Living & Residential Education staff. The test must be taken within three days of arrival to campus. Please plan your test within three days of your scheduled arrival date indicated in the E-Services Portal.
All students, whether they presented a PCR or antigen test at check-in, will need to schedule a PCR test at one of the GW Testing Centers after arrival. The testing center is open 7 days a week from August 20 – August 28.
For additional information about testing requirements, visit GW’s COVID Resource Center.
Important Parking Considerations
There are two distinct phases to parking during move-in: unloading and parking.
- Unloading: During designated move-in days and timeslots, the space along the street in front of the residence halls will be reserved, no parking. These spaces are reserved for unloading purposes only. Once vehicles are empty, they should be immediately moved to longer-term parking. Vehicles cannot be left unattended in unloading zones. Due to our urban environment, unattended vehicles can be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense. GW and CLRE are not liable for parking and towing fines incurred during move-in.
- Parking: Once unloaded, vehicles should be moved to one of our visitor garages. During designated move-in days, students will receive a parking voucher for the first three hours of parking in one of our garages when they check in. Paid street parking is available near our residence halls for students and families to utilize on their move-in day. Parking is free on Sundays in identified locations in D.C.

What to Bring to Campus
We encourage you to review our recommendations on What to Bring to Campus prior to your arrival to campus! Planning for move-in can be an overwhelming experience, and we have put together recommendations that set our students up for success in getting their year started.
Tips for Packing and Shipping:
- Please keep in mind there are some items that are prohibited in the halls. These items will be confiscated if found during routine health and safety inspections conducted by Campus Living and Residential Education staff.
- Pack all cables and manuals for your electronic devices.
- Lighten your load by shipping your belongings to GW for move-in.

Move-In Day Checklist & Resources
Move-in day is an exciting day for all of our new residents! Review our suggestions below to make your move-in process as smooth as it can possibly be!
Pre-Departure:
- Check the Campus Advisories Page before you arrive.
- Verify your driving directions: If driving or using a ride-share service from a nearby airport, enter the GPS arrival address for your residence hall (as noted above), not GW’s main address.
- If taking Metro from Union Station or a nearby airport, check their time schedule. Metro is currently operating at a reduced schedule during summer maintenance work.
- Print your campus map of Foggy Bottom or Mount Vernon before arrival (Sometimes, a physical map to hold is better than trying to resize a map on your mobile device).
- If you're an upperclass student, locate your GWorld card—you’ll need the card to access your hall. If you lost your card over the summer, you need to go to the GWorld Office to get a new one.
-
Complete your online self-check-in at least 24-hours in advance of your arrival to ensure you have access to your building and room.
When You Arrive on Campus:
NOTE! Depending on your arrival day, you may be able to check in at your residence hall, or you may be asked to check in at one of our central check-in hubs. This information is located above in the Move-In Process for each hall.
If driving or using a ride-share service and your check-in is your hall:
- Locate your residence hall and follow the directions of GW staff providing on-site traffic control directions.
- There may be a short line/wait before you can be directed to a location for you to temporarily park and unload.
- You will have the ability to temporarily park in front, on the side or behind your building to unload. Once unloaded, we will direct you to the closest garage for you to park. You will receive a three-hour voucher to park, but you may stay as long as you want and, upon departure, will be prompted to pay the fee difference if you stayed longer than three hours.
- Because of the scattered arrival times, we are not able to offer long-term parking in front of the residence hall buildings.
- Upon arrival, go check in. Have your driver and others wait in the car.
If driving or using a ride-share service and your check-in is at one of the central hubs:
- First, go to the building/hall that corresponds with your building’s check-in location. Locate this information in the Move-in Process section above. We recommend that you get out and check in and have your driver continue to your actual residence hall, where they should wait until you meet back up with them.
- Because of the scattered arrival times, we are not able to secure/reserve parking in front or on the sides of the residence halls.
- Depending on the time of day, you may be able to temporarily park and quickly unload your car. However, our buildings are often on busy streets that are crowded during rush hour traffic, and it will be impossible to temporarily park during these times.
- At check-in, we will note the closest garage for you to park. It may be easier to park and unload your belongings into the blue carts in a nearby garage.
- You will receive a three-hour voucher to park, but you may stay as long as you want and upon departure will be prompted to pay the fee difference if you stayed longer than three hours.
If arriving by public transportation:
- You can go to your check-in location and we’ll be happy to assist.
The Check-In Process:
NOTE! Depending on your arrival day, you may be able to check in at your residence hall, or you may be asked to check in at one of our central check-in hubs. This information is located above in the Move-In Process for each hall.
- All students will be required to present their negative COVID-19 test results when they check-in. Students will not be required to quarantine before or after arrival at the residence halls.
- If you're a first-year or transfer student, you will pick up your GWorld card at check-in. However, if you did not submit your photo by the August 10 deadline, you will need to go to the GWorld Office to have your card created.
- If you're an upperclass student and lost your card over the summer, you need to go to the GWorld Office to get a new one. At check-in you will receive a temporary access card for your room & hall only.
- You will also pick up your U•Pass Metrocard and other check-in materials at check-in.
Note: You will not be able to tap into your individual room until you check in!
After You Have Settled into Your Room:
- Enjoy the unpacking process and organizing your room.
- Pick up any packages that you mailed to GW at Mail & Package Services or at one of the temporary package centers set up in various residence halls.
- Conduct a visual assessment of your room. Report any repair issues through our FixIt system.
- Get connected to the Internet by connecting wirelessly to the GWireless WiFi Network.
- Think Green! Break down your moving boxes and bring them to designated recycling areas or send them home with your family to reuse. Also, consider energy-efficient items for use in your residence hall room. Visit Sustainability at GW to find out more ways to get involved with the green mission at GW.
Final Tips for a Successful Move-In
- Label all packages and bags with your name, hall, and room number.
- Know where you're going and how to get there by printing directions and maps before leaving home.
- Obey all DC parking and traffic signs to avoid getting a ticket.
- Bring a hand truck if you have one.
- Never leave belongings unattended.
- Don’t forget your patience!
- Plan for the weather.
- Remember that commonly-needed items are conveniently available at retail stores nearby.

Move-In FAQs
- Is a housing deposit required?
-
A housing deposit is not required. Students should register for housing if they need on-campus housing at GW.
- Can I arrive on an earlier date?
-
We ask that you arrive on the day designated for your arrival to ensure that everything is ready for you. If you have special circumstances, we will answer them on a case-by-case basis. Please reach out to [email protected] with these questions.
- Can I arrive on a later date?
-
We will be able to accommodate late arrivals. We ask that you reach out to us at [email protected] to let us know of your arrival date so we know when to expect you.
*Please note that we strongly recommend all incoming first-year students arrive no later than Monday, August 22 so they can fully participate in Orientation programs.
- Can I change my move-in timeslot?
-
Move-in timeslots do have a capacity limit to ensure that buildings do not overcrowd during move-in. Students are able to change their move-in timeslot via the E-Services Portal at their convenience, but slots are subject to availability.
- What does parking look like on move-in days?
-
In general, parking will be available on the street near your building for unloading purposes only. Parking meters on formal move-in days are reserved for loading and unloading only. Once vehicles are empty, they should be moved to our parking garages. At least one person should remain with each vehicle until the cars is unloaded and moved to a garage. Unattended cars in loading zones are subject to ticketing and towing. GW and CLRE are not responsible for parking fines.
Vouchers for parking validation will be available to students moving in during our major move-in days: August 18-22, 26, and 27. CLRE is only able to provide validated parking on these dates. Arrivals outside of these dates should expect to pay for parking in Foggy Bottom and on the Mount Vernon Campus.
We ask that you use the first hour of your timeslot to unload, and the second three hours of your timeslot to set up your new space.
- I used Summer Storage through Interstate Moving when I left in Spring 2022. When will my things be delivered?
-
We will coordinate the delivery of your items to your Fall space prior to your arrival on campus. Be sure to sign up for your move-in timeslot when you're able so we can be sure to get you your items before you get to campus!
- What dining options are available during move-in?
-
As we finalize plans for August, our partners at GW Dining will have options available on campus for our students arriving. Please check GW Dining for more information as we get closer to move-in!
- Will movers be allowed? Can my family/friends help me move in?
-
GW and CLRE are closely monitorning the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and guidance from the District of Columbia Department of Health. We anticipate permitting move-in helpers for our students during move-in, but recognize that the pandemic is ongoing. We will confirm this to all of our Fall 2022 residents over the summer.
- I'm a first-year student! Where do I get my GWorld card and U•Pass?
-
For our students arriving to GW for the first time, we will have your GWorld and U•Pass available for you at your residence hall when you check-in.
- What is the mailing address of my residence hall?
-
Our building-specific addresses are available on our residence halls page.
- What should I bring to campus when I move in?
-
We've put together a list of recommended items for you to bring to campus. Remember that for the safety of all of our residential students, there are also prohibited items that you should not bring.
Don't forget to consult your roommate(s)/suitemate(s) before making purchases so that you don't inadvertently buy multiple of the same item!
- Where can I pick up mail I had shipped to campus?
-
Plan your shipping and delivery so that your package arrives a few days before arrival and no more than one week prior. You will be notified via email by Mail and Package Services that your package has arrived.
Follow this template to address the package to yourself using your room and building:
Your Full Name (as it appears on your university ID)

If your hall is not listed below, you will pick up your package at Mail & Package Services (locations listed below for Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon Campus). Packages not picked up at our temporary locations will be available at the campus’s mail and package center after the move-in period has ended.

Please wait until you receive a notification from MPS (not the delivery service) that your package is ready for pickup from their office before you attempt to retrieve your package. Delivery services such as FedEx, UPS, and Amazon will drop off multiple packages in one delivery. As such, MPS needs time to organize and sort the packages so that the pick-up process is quick and easy for you when you arrive.
Foggy Bottom Mail & Package Center: Support Building, Suite L-101, 2025 F Street, NW
Mount Vernon Mail & Package Center: West Hall, Suite B-106.
The hours of operation for the Mail and Package Services offices are located on their website. In addition to these hours, the offices will also be open from 12pm-6pm on Sundays during the move-in period in late August.
If you have additional questions about sending or receiving mail, please email the Mail & Package Services Office directly at [email protected]
- What are helpful resources for my room?
-
Submit a FixIt Ticket for any Maintenance Concerns:
If you find something wrong in your unit after you move in, please submit a FixIt Ticket so you can track the progress of your request. If your request is an emergency, please call 202-994-6706, ext. 2.
Lockouts and MobileID
Always remember to have your GWorld and phone with you when you leave your room. In the event you lock yourself out of your room because you left your GWorld card in your room, the quickest way to unlock your door, exterior doors, and elevators is to access Mobile ID (available in the App Store or Google Play) to access a mobile key. Check the Mobile ID website for instructions and policies. If you are unable to use Mobile ID, go to the Key Depot on the first floor of the Support Building (2025 F Street, NW) between the hours of 7am-11pm. After 11pm, please call your building phone number for assistance. There is a phone located in the lobby of each residence hall.
If your room is too hot or too cold:
If you’re unsure how the air conditioning in your room and/or building works, check the Facilities page on cooling. Keep in mind that some thermostats may be locked to temperatures within a certain range.
TV Service:
You can stream live TV and record and download shows for viewing later through Comcast’s Xfinity On Campus TV streaming service directly to laptops, desktops, mobile devices, and Roku devices on campus. There is also an option to individually customize the service by opting into additional premium and international channels for an additional cost (month-to-month pre-paid basis).
