Summer 2024 Housing

Campus Living and Residential Education is looking forward to safely housing GW students and welcoming non-GW groups and individuals in the residence halls in Summer 2024. GW students are eligible to live in summer housing if they meet the following requirements:

  • Be a current GW undergraduate student in spring 2024. Students returning from study abroad or any spring semester leave are eligible to live in summer housing.
  • Be a GW undergraduate student in summer or fall 2024. Incoming first-year students for fall 2024 are not eligible to live in summer housing.
  • Be involved in an educationally-related activity during the summer, including but not limited to taking classes, participating in a structured internship (in-person or virtual), having employment or other work, or involvement in summer-long service opportunities

In Summer 2024, most residence hall rooms will be filled at a maximum room capacity of one person per bedroom. In most rooms, students will be assigned their own bedroom, even if that bedroom has more than one bed in it. Summer room assignments will default to this unless GW students desire to live in rooms at regular capacity (equivalent to the number of beds in the room). GW students will be able to request this regular room capacity in the summer housing registration form.

All Summer 2024 housing will be for the entire summer, and there will not be any prorated summer housing options. Session I-only or Session II-only housing will only be open to students in pre-approved university summer programs, such as Summer Academy.

Summer Housing Options and Costs for GW Students

Some residence halls have a variety of room types that may be different from academic year housing, as we aim to fill most residence halls to a maximum room capacity of one person per bedroom.

For residents interested in purchasing a meal plan, we offer two options.

Frequently Asked Questions: Summer Housing

General Question, Dates, and Deadlines

Is there a deadline to apply for summer housing?

No, there is not a hard deadline to register for summer housing. All eligible GW students who wish to live on-campus for the summer will be accommodated. Summer housing assignments are not made on a first-come, first-serve basis.

All students who register for summer housing by Mid-Late April will receive their summer housing assignment by Late April - Early May at the latest.

If you submit your summer housing registration after Mid-Late April, know that your desired housing option may not be available.

If I am not living on campus in the fall, how long can I stay during the summer?

Summer residents not residing on campus in the fall are required to move out by Saturday, August 3 at 12 PM at the latest. This includes students with off-campus apartments for the fall or are studying abroad in the fall. There will be no exceptions to this move-out date or extended summer stay available. All summer housing costs remain the same regardless of a student's summer move out date.

Who lives on-campus in the summer? Is it just GW students?

Housing at GW during the summer is open to a mix of populations:

  • GW undergraduate students
  • students from other schools who are in Washington, DC for the summer for internships and other employment
  • groups of interns in dedicated programs who live together in the same building / floor

You can view the GW Summer Housing website to learn more about the non-GW populations that also live in our residence halls during the summer.

Costs & Refunds

Are dining plans required in the summer?

No, dining plans are not required for the summer and are optionally available for all summer residents who desire one.

How do I pay for summer housing costs?

Similar to spring and fall semester housing, summer housing costs will be sent to a student's Student Account eBill. All questions regarding payment options and methods should be directed to the Student Accounts Office.

Does financial aid cover summer housing costs?

As living in summer housing is not required for any GW student, generally financial aid options to defray summer housing costs are more limited. Most students, regardless of financial aid package, are required to pay the full summer housing cost.

Each student's situation is unique to themselves and we encourage questions regarding specifics of a student's financial aid to be directed to the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

If I register for summer housing and then change my mind, can I cancel my summer housing?

Yes, students may cancel their summer housing application by completing the "Cancel Housing" form on your GW Home Portal

If I register for summer housing and then change my mind, can I cancel my housing after I receive my summer housing assignment?

Yes, students may cancel their summer housing by completing the "Cancel Housing" form on your GW Home Portal.

There is no deadline to cancel summer housing. Students who live in their summer housing assignment from May 15 onward will be refunded a prorated amount based on the number of days they have lived over the summer.

Room Assignments & Roommates

Is it possible that I will be assigned to a housing option that I cannot afford?

No, in your summer housing registration you will asked to indicate which of the housing options you desire. You will only be placed in the housing options that you desire.

If there is no space left in any of the housing options that you desire, Campus Living & Residential Education will reach out to you to let you know. From there, you would need to decide if you would like to choose a different housing, with its corresponding cost, or cancel your summer housing registration.

Will I automatically live with another GW student for the summer?

No, it is possible that you could be assigned to a room with a non-GW summer resident (intern) if the room you are assigned to has more than one person in it.

What does 'one person per bedroom' mean for summer room assignments?

Due to the large number of non-GW summer residents (predominantly interns from other colleges) we will have living in our residence halls over the summer, we have decided to default to a "one person per bedroom" room capacity for most rooms on campus. That means the maximum number of people assigned to any of these rooms would equal the number of distinct bedrooms in the suite. While this will be how all non-GW summer residents are assigned to rooms, GW students may choose to live with roommates up to the regular capacity of a room (think 2023-2024 academic year room sizes). That choice to live with more than one person per bedroom will be available for GW students to request in the summer housing registration.

For example:

  • Regular studio two-person unit = Studio one-person unit in Summer 2024 (ex: District House double)
  • Regular 2-bedroom four-person unit = 2-bedroom two-person unit in Summer 2024 (ex: Shenkman Hall quad)
  • Regular 3-bedroom four-person unit = 3-bedroom three-person unit in Summer 2024 (ex: South Hall quad)
  • Regular 4-bedroom four-person unit = 4-bedroom four-person unit in Summer 2024 (ex: South Hall quad)

All extra sets of furniture in each bedroom will remain in the room for the summer. Removal of furniture will not be permitted.

Can I live in my spring 2024 room for the summer?

We cannot guarantee that a student who desires to stay in their spring 2024 room for the summer will be assigned to that same room.

During summer housing registration, we will ask for preferences to live in spring 2024 rooms for the summer. We will do our best to accommodate that desire, but we do not expect that every student who desires this will be accommodated.

Can I live in my fall 2024 room for the summer?

We cannot guarantee that a student who desires to move into their fall 2024 room for the summer will be assigned to that room.

During summer housing registration, we will ask for preferences to live in fall 2024 rooms for the summer. We will do our best to accommodate that desire, but we do not expect that every student who desires this will be accommodated.

Are summer housing assignments made on a first-come, first-serve basis?

No, summer housing assignments are not made on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no incentive to register for summer housing immediately after the registration period begins.

However, summer housing registrations submitted after April 24 may result in fewer options as spaces begin filling up.

Moving In/Out

If I am staying for the summer, do I have to move out at the end of the spring?

No, all spring residents staying for the summer are guaranteed housing during all semester transition periods. Outside of your summer housing cost, there are no other costs for staying in housing during semester transition periods.

If I am staying for the summer and have on-campus housing in the fall, do I have to move out at the end of the summer?

No, all summer residents staying for the fall are guaranteed housing during all semester transition periods. Outside of your summer housing cost, there are no other costs for staying in housing during semester transition periods.

If I have to move rooms between spring-to-summer or summer-to-fall, am I required to make the move on the designated moving period?

Yes, if you are moving rooms from spring-to-summer or from summer-to-fall, you are required to make your move across the designated moving periods:

  • Spring-to-Summer Room Moves:

May 15- 16 for Somers, JBKO, FSK, and Phillip Amsterdam Hall residents*

*This early move period is required to vacate buildings for planned facilitates work in these select residence halls. No exceptions will be made.

May 22 - May 23 for all other residents

  • Summer-to-Fall Room Moves: TBD (two-day move period)

There will not be exceptions provided for room moves outside of these periods. Do not schedule travel outside the Washington, DC region across those periods and begin to plan your time commitments to account for required moves over these periods.

The Vern Option

How would I move to and from the campus in May and/or August?

Students moving to or from Mount Vernon for on-campus summer housing purposes will receive a special set of Lyft credits on designated moving days to help facilitate easier moving between campuses. Our goal is to make a move to or from Foggy Bottom and Mount Vernon as easy as possible.

Will every student who chooses the Vern Option be assigned there?

Yes, based on the Vern option's popularity in 2023, we anticipate that any students who choose a preference for the Vern Option will be assigned to live there.

What will the Vern Express schedule be?

You will be able to view Vern Express summer schedule closer to the start of the summer. You should anticipate 15-minute departure frequency for most of the summer.

Will there be dining open and available on the Mount Vernon Campus?

The operating status for Pelham Commons dining has not yet been determined for summer 2024.

Will the West Hall Fitness Center be open during the summer?

Yes, we anticipate that the West Hall Fitness Center will be open for summer 2024.

Is parking available on the Vern for the summer?

Yes, learn more about GW's parking policy and how to request summer parking at Mount Vernon.

Questions around parking should be directed to [email protected].

Will the outdoor pool at Mount Vernon be open for the summer?

Yes, we anticipate that the Mount Vernon Pool will be open during summer 2024. Current GW students can access the pool and swim free with an active GWorld card.
