As you plan ahead for the fall, we encourage you to consider to pack light and have discussions with your roommates about comfort level regarding sharing items that may have typically been shared in the past. We recommend that you consider purchasing common items when you come to campus. Many malls and stand-alone retail outlets are within walking distance or a short Metro ride or drive away. Some nearby stores that students and families can use to shop for room essentials include.

What To Consider Bringing to Campus

Hygiene & Personal Health
We all play a role in assuring the safety of the entire GW community, it will be the personal responsibility of the residents to maintain the hygiene and cleanliness of their space. During the first two weeks of school, Campus Living staff will work with every resident to establish a cleaning routine and schedule that all members will be expected to follow. Students may want to consider purchasing cleaning supplies as they arrive back to campus.

For Your Room

  • Desk and floor Lamps - non-halogen bulbs
  • Painters "blue" tape - hang posters & pictures without causing damage to the wall
  • Lock Box - for your valuables, passport, identification, etc. 
  • Laundry supplies - detergent, basket, drying rack, iron, etc. 
  • Water filter pitcher
  • Reusable grocery bags - There is a $0.05 tax on plastic bags in D**
  • Umbrella
  • Kitchen supplies and utensils

One more thing to add to your packing list -- If you did not already hear, we are going to be phasing out single-use plastics. Over the summer, the university installed water filling stations throughout campus. Don’t forget to bring a reusable water bottle or two.
