After Hours Support

Campus Living & Residential Education provides multiple layers of after-hours support to assist residents when university offices are closed.

Emergency Situations

For emergencies in progress, immediately contact the George Washington University Police Department (GWPD) at (202) 994-6111 or call 911.

Resident Advisor In-Community Shifts

Residents living in first- and second-year communities have access to a Resident Advisor (RA) on duty every night when the university is not in an official break period. Resident Advisors complete In-Community Shifts from 9:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. and are available to assist with community concerns, provide support, address facilities-related concerns, and connect students with additional resources as needed.

Residents will receive the GW RA number upon moving into their residence hall.

Community Assistant Desk Shifts

Residents living in upper-class communities are supported by Community Assistants (CAs) who staff evening desk shifts in designated residential communities, Sunday-Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., during the academic year when the university is not in an official break period.

Community Assistants can assist with general questions, resource referrals, and connecting residents with additional support.

Administrator On-Call

Our residential communities are staffed by trained full-time professional staff members who participate in a 24-hour Administrator On-Call (AoC) rotation. The Administrator On-Call provides after-hours professional staff support for urgent situations that cannot wait until the next business day and serves as an additional level of response for residents and student staff.

Residents may call the Administrator on Call outside the RA In-Community Shift Hours and CA desk hours, or be referred to the Administrator On-Call by an RA, CA, or other university official when a situation requires professional staff involvement.

Residents will receive the GW Administrator on Call number upon moving into their residence hall.

When Should the Administrator On-Call Be Contacted?

Examples of situations that may require Administrator On-Call involvement include:
  • Facilities emergencies that present an immediate health or safety concern
  • Significant or escalated roommate or community conflicts
  • Medical emergencies or serious health concerns
  • Mental health emergencies or wellness concerns
  • Missing student concerns
  • Serious injuries
  • Situations involving significant safety risks
  • Other urgent incidents that cannot reasonably wait until the next business day
